Emigration from Russia According to Foreign Statistics

  • Михаил Борисович Денисенко

Abstract

The author of this article argues that the study of emigration and immigration in any country should be based on both national statistics and the migration statistics of other countries. Foreign sources of migration data are sometimes even more valuable in comparison with national statistics. The comparative analysis of Russia's estimates of emigration to Germany, Israel, Canada, USA, and Finland compared with estimates of immigration from Russia to related countries in the 1990ies allows the author to make a conclusion that real emigration from Russia was at least 1,2 times more than announced by State Committee of Statistics (Goskomstat).
